Ninh Binh: The committee held a preparatory meeting deployment for Vesak 2014

In the morning, 20th March 2014, at the meeting hall of Bai Dinh temple, Ninh Binh, the second conference of UN Day of Vesak 2014 International Organization Committee was continuously taken place. The program of the conference in the morning continually discussed issues concerning to the organization of the UN Day of Vesak 2014.

The participants and witnesses were Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang - Vice President of Executive Council of National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha cum Honorary President of the UN Day of Vesak 2014 International Organization Committee; Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon – Standing Vice President of Executive Council cum Vice President IOC; Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu – Standing Vice President of Executive Council cum President IOC; Most Venerable Thich Thien Duyen , Most Venerable Thich Gia Quang, Most Venerable Thack Sok Xane – Vice President of Executive Council cum Vice President IOC and Maha Sangha in Executive Council and Representatives of Maha Sangha from different departments of IOC.

On the international side, participants were Most Venerable Doctor Tampelawela Dhammaratana - Vice President of ICDV; Most Venerable Doctor Phra Sophonvachirabhorn - Member of ICDV; Most Venerable Doctor Yuan Ci – Deputy Secretary-General of ICDV; Most Venerable Doctor Bhante Chao Chu - Member of ICDV; Most Venerable Doctor A. Nanda Thero - Member of ICDV, Sri Lanka; Mr. Goh Seng Chai - Deputy Secretary-General of ICDV.

 

On the authority side, participants were Mr. Dung Pham - Deputy Minister of Ministry of the Interior, Head of Religious Government Committee and representatives of central and local departments.

Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu expressed his speech for the opening

 

In the opening speech, Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu affirmed the significance of this UN Day of Vesak Celebrations. In 2008, Vietnam hosted the UN Day of Vesak Celebrations which was organized and sponsored by the government. This year, it is the first time for National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha who hosts the Vesak Celebration with international stature. Therefore, the organized work still has lots of limitations and difficulties. However, Most Venerable believed that, with high-leveled effort of whole Buddhist Sangha, this celebration would be successfully achieved as expectation of Vietnamese Buddhists in particular and all Buddhists over the world in general.

Most Venerable Doctor Tampalawela Dhammaratana expressed his speech

On behalf of the International Organizing Committee, Most Venerable Doctor Tampelawela Dhammaratana - Vice President of ICDV, in his speech, emphasized main theme of this Vesak 2014 is very relevant to the Buddhist doctrine, thoughts as well as goals of Buddhism. Vietnamese Buddhism has had a long-standing historic tradition. Since ancient times, all ruling kings of nation strongly supported and contributed on Buddhist development. Most Venerable hoped that in this celebration, outside the effort of NVBS, the government also has supports to help the NVBS for the preparatory work and organization of the celebration.

Mr. Dung Pham - Deputy Minister of Ministry of the Interior, Head of Religious Government Committee in his speech emphasized that “The Vesak Celebration that is hosted in Vietnam this time continuously affirms that Vietnamese government and people always respect and support the United Nations sound decisions in selecting the Vesak day of Buddha to be the international religious cultural day. It is concurrently clear that Vietnamese government always takes care and respects the good ethical values of religions to bring for social life, among them Buddhism (the biggest religion in Vietnam)”.

After that, Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien - Secretary General of UN Day of the UN Day of Vesak 2014 International Organization Committee preliminarily reported sections of the Vesak celebration prepartory work. According to this, basically, most of the sections had specific projects. In decorative and festival work, the IOC already designed band rolls, banners, greeting gates, Buddhist pennons for decoration in Noi Bai airport and places where the Vesak celebration will be taken place such as Bai Dinh temple, Ninh Binh city, and foot paths of delegates. In Hanoi, the IOC intends borrow the electronic boards of 1000 year Thang Long to run media banners during the Vesak celebration.

 

For volunteers, the IOC foresees to select them in universities in Hanoi and Ninh Binh, each university would choose around 100 students and at the end of March, it will have had specific lists. The training and practice for the volunteers would be progressed in mid of April. The volunteers who are responsible to pick delegates up are directly trained at the scenes (from the airport to hotels, from the hotels to Bai Dinh temple).

In regarding with tasks of the ceremonial sections, all works were clearly planned and specifically arranged. The greeting of Maha Sangha and delegates in the opening ceremony would be celebrated in a solemn and formal status. It is different against year 2008. This celebration would have a traditional Buddha bath ceremony in order to meet the spiritual demand for over 15.000 attending Buddhists. However, there is another ceremony for worshiping Buddha to pray for happy citizens and secure and peaceful world in the evening of 9th May with traditional ceremonies from three regions.

The cultural activities were also propounded projects for art performance programs in the opening, closing ceremonies and at night 8th May by the IOC.

The exhibitive activities include topics such as Buddhist pictures and photos, Panorama technique photos of famous Vietnamese temples, Ninh Binh culture and people.

To ebulliently promote for the activities of the UN Day of Vesak 2014, the IOC intends to would have carriage decorated with flowers from Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh and Ha Tinh provinces that would be run on 1 national highway directly to Bai Dinh temple.

For communication works, according to plan, it would be live broadcast for the opening, closing of the UN Day of Vesak 2014 on VTV1, VTV4 and AVG channels. The performance would be relayed on VTC and AVG channels. In the coming period, the communication sections has planned to hold a Buddhist and media discussion in order to have a newer view about the communication works in great Buddhist celebrations. The IOC is also producing a documentary film about Vietnamese Buddhism in 12 episodes and would be broadly released.

One special characteristic in this Vesak celebration is Vietnamese Buddhist culture fair activity with activities, stalls of Buddhist culture and national culture combined with traditional art performances. Proposal for this activity was specifically presented for entire conference by Ha An company.

Logistics Committee has also been proposed a specific scenario with 6000 buffet, 30.000 rice boxes per day. New dishes and fresh vegetables have also been ordered to be ready for serving the celebration. Estimation for the logistics expenditure in the celebration is about 15 billion Vietnamese dollars.

The security checking was also given detailed plan in the Government meeting for the UN Day of Vesak celebration in the afternoon of 19th March 2014 by the Ministry for Police. Ministry for foreign affairs has informed to Vietnamese High Commission or Vietnamese Embassy of countries which have international participants to support visa applications for international delegations so that their visa can be quickly issued.

The printing and publishing works was also mentioned with around 20 book types of English and Vietnamese which would be broadly printed. The card printing for delegates would be tightened to avoid fake cards. Due to objective reasons, construction of the main hall for the celebration has been being urgently completed. Estimation for the main hall would have been completed in half a month before the celebration takes place with full necessary convenience.

After the preliminary report of Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien, it was a project presentation of Most Venerable Thich Tho Lac - in charge of the residence and ceremony, Most Venerable Thich Trung Hau, Most Venerable Thich Hai An - in charge of the cultural section, Ha An company - in charge of the culture fair. Then, Maha Sangha had contributed practical ideas for the plans given by the IOC.

In the conclusion of his speech, Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon expressed his gratitude to the government, the central and local committees for their supporting and helping the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha who progresses preparatory works for the celebration.

With the ideas contributed from the NVBS, the IOC had recorded and would revise the plans to get fuller activities for the celebration. By the way, Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon also presented a clear financial situation for serving the celebration. According to him, because of this year under the financial socialization, the expenditure for the activities of the celebration is difficult, and needs everyone’s help so that the celebration will be successfully taken place.
