Messages from Italy

From T.Y.S Lama Gangchen, Italy

Thank you very much for the invitation to this 11th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations held in Vietnam.
I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to all the organizers of the United Nations Vesak Day every year. The first event was celebrated in United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2001. Subsequently, Thailand has generously hosted the event almost annually and in 2008, Vietnam offered hospitality for the celebrations at the National Convention Center in Hanoi. I very much rejoice in Vietnam hosting the United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations and Conference for a second time. I still remember with great joy the wonderful event held in Hanoi in 2008 where I had the honor to participate.
Particular thanks and appreciation to the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (NVBS) for organizing this 1 Ith United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations at the Bai Dinh Temple Convention Center, Ninh Binh Province from the 7th to the 11th of May this year.
This year’s theme “The Buddhist Perspective towards Achieving the UN Millennium Goals” is of special significance in highlighting the importance of the principle peace message of Buddhism, - such as tolerance, respect and compassion for all living beings and the environment on this planet, - in order to achieve world peace. Surely this is the best investment for this country, and for this world.
Over the past century we have witnessed the greatest technological advancements, and yet at the same time, experience rapidly increasing global anxiety, violence and natural disasters. Hence we may come to the conclusion that modernization alone is not enough for improving health and happiness and installing peace on this planet, but that spiritual values are of vital importance to develop global peace and harmony.
On behalf of our Western Buddhist centers and organizations world-wide from many different countries (Italy, Spain, Holland, Germany, England, France, Malaysia, USA, India, China and Brazil) we thank and congratulate Vietnam and wish the very best of success for this auspicious event, for the future of Vietnam and for World Peace.
With many Tashi Delek
T.Y.S. Lama Gangchen
