HE. Tony Abbott MP, Prime Minister of Australia

From the Prime Minister of Australia

I am pleased to provide this message for the United Nations International Day of Vesak.
Each year, millions of Buddhists around the world unite in observance of the birth, enlightenment and passing of Lord Gautama Buddha.
This year Buddhists are travelling to Vietnam to mark Vesak. It will be an opportunity for Australian Buddhists to participate in discussions with international religious leaders, scholars and speakers.
Religious faith is an important element in Australian society. For many, it provides meaning, purpose and inspiration to their daily lives. Our democracy rests on an understanding that every individual counts; and our social solidarity rests on the understanding that we should treat others as we would have them treat us.
I acknowledge your commitment to equality, respect and understanding as taught by Gautama Buddha.
I send my best wishes to everyone marking the United Nations Day of Vesak.

The Hon Tony Abbott MP
Prime Minister of Australia
