Journal Meeting: Vietnam to host the UN Day of Vesak 2014

The 11­­­­­­th  United Nations Day of Vesak officially is held by National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in May, 2014 at Bai Dinh temple in Ninh Binh provnice and will be done in full socialized form.

On 24th November in the afternoon conference, this news was informed by National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.

This is the second time the United Nations Day of Vesak day and international Buddhist workshop are organized in Vietnam. This is the second time that the UND of Vesak and International Buddhist Workshop are organized in Vietnam.

Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon, Standing Vice President cum Secretary General of Executive Council of National Vietnam Buddhist  said that “The celebration will take place from 7 to 11th May 2014, with major theme “Buddhist Contribution Towards Achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals”.

The celebration will include five science workshop forums: “Buddhist Response to Sustainable Development and Social Change”, “Buddhist Response to Global Warming and Environmental Protection”, “ Buddhist  Contributions To Healthy Life”, “Peace-building and Post-Conflict Recovery”, “Buddhist Education and University Level Curriculum”.

At the same time, there are many activities like Vietnam Buddha culture exhibition, Culture-Food Fair and Song and Dance Vaudeville, Buddhist Film Festival and the event is expected to print publications about Buddha statue in Vietnam, Vietnamese temple, etc…

The UNDV 2014 and workshops are expected to welcome about 10.000 participants including 1.500 Buddhist leaders, Buddhist sects, professors and doctorates, Buddhist scholars, as well as Buddhist practitioners in all various Buddhist traditions from 100 countries and territories and 8.500 Vietnamese Buddhist followers and Vietnamese people.

Hòa thượng Brahmapundit, Chủ tịch Ủy ban tổ chức quốc tế Đại lễ Vesak Liên hợp quốc, cho biết Đại lễ Phật đản hay còn gọi là đại lễ Tam hợp để kỷ niệm ngày đản sinh của đức Phật, ngày đức Phật thành đạo và về cõi Niết bàn.

This is an important foreign event which contributes to rise the  role of Vietnamese Buddhism in international integration, affirming Vietnam’s position and  responsibility towards the United Nations, this is concurrently an opportunity to advertise Vietnam’s image, land and people, develop spiritual and ecological tourism and campaign UNESCO to recognize Trang An eco-tourism complex as a world natural heritage site.

Most venerable Brahmapundit, President of the International Organizing Committee for the United Nations Day of Vesak, said that “The UNDV Celebration or Vesak Day to celebrate the birth of Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment and his passing away.”

The celebration is internationally recognizedand was officially approved by the United Nations in 1999.

Annually, the UNDV Celeration was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and its regional United Nations offices.

Most Venerable Brahmapundit affirmed that he would support the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha to successfullt organize the UNDV 2014.

The first preliminary session about the 2014 United Nations of Vesak Day was taken place on 23 and 24th November with more than 70 domestic and foreign delegates.
